Description

The 2024 Africa Sustainable Development Report, produced jointly by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and multilateral institution partners, makes for somber reading (UNECFA, 2024). It indicates that less than 6 percent of the 32 measurable Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets are on track to be achieved by 2030. At best, progress is modest in key areas of poverty reduction, gender equality, and access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation, whilst challenges persist and are even intensifying around food security, social protection, corruption, and climate vulnerability. To accelerate progress in achieving the SDGs, and the implementation of wider sustainability agendas in Africa, much work is needed. Business, trade, and investment have critical roles to play in promoting sustainability in Africa, however, so do other actors including states, civil society, social economy organizations, universities, and multiple actors working in cross-sector partnerships. This special issue of the Africa Journal of Management focusses on challenges and opportunities of sustainability in Africa, including and going beyond the activities of business. We invite contributions that provide novel empirical and theoretical insights, and important practical and policy implications for sustainability in Africa. Examples of possible topics include:

  • Harnessing indigenous knowledge for sustainable development in Africa
  • Sustainability, geopolitics, and peace in Africa
  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation in Africa
  • Corporate sustainability and responsible business practices in Africa
  • Food security and sustainable agriculture in Africa
