CALL FOR PAPERS - The Tribe and Organizations in Africa

As a follow-up to the Professional Development Workshop (PDW) on Tribal Identity and the Challenge of Building Inclusive Organizations in Africa, held at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Boston, we decided to organize a special issue to explore in-depth the topic of tribal identity, diversity, and inclusion in African organizations. Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been increased interest of management scholars and practitioners in Africa as indicated by conferences, symposia, and academic publications (Nkomo, Zoogah, & Acquaah, 2015; Walsh, 2011, 2015; Zoogah, Peng, & Woldu, 2015). One of the key motivations is to understand the continent which is “marked by fast growth, limited growth, or no growth at all, Africa’s business, government, and civil sectors all need world-class management.”

Call for Papers/Proposals: Sustainability as a Solution to Global Business Challenges Conference at UT Dallas, April 16-18, 2020

The Sustainable Global Business Initiative of the Ann and Jack Graves Charitable Foundation and the Center for Global Business at The University of Texas at Dallas are pleased to announce that a conference will be held April 16-18, 2020. The conference will bring together like-minded scholars, practitioners, policymakers and students involved in different aspects of sustainability as a solution to global business challenges.

Our conference will cover the fields of sustainability, corporate social responsibility, international business, strategic management, cross-cultural management, technology strategy, and global entrepreneurship from around the world. Examples of possible topics include:

Social Entrepreneurship Doctoral Seminar, Cape Town, South Africa

We are inviting doctoral students (and interested faculty) to a week-long, intensive social entrepreneurship doctoral seminar. Social entrepreneurship is a vitally important arena of scholarly research and teaching. Doctoral level training is needed to equip researchers in the core concepts and empirical findings of this emerging domain. This seminar involves two of the field’s leading scholars as co-teachers and provides an in-depth survey of recent social entrepreneurship scholarship and its theoretical background.

Call for proposals: The Corporate Responsibility to Respect Human Rights in Africa, EthicsLab 1st Anniversary Conference, Yaounde, Cameroon 17-18 March 2020

The discourse on corporate accountability for human rights violations has been shaped to a great extent by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), resulting from the work of John Ruggie, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Business and Human Rights. The UNGPs were endorsed by the UN Human Rights Council in June 2011 and rest on three pillars: the State duty to protect against human rights violations; the corporate responsibility to respect human rights in their operations; and greater access by victims to effective remedy, both judicial and non-judicial, for human rights violations.

Organization theory developed its key theoretical tenets through scholarship on organizations in North America and other Western, developed contexts. As a result, organization theory is rooted in a relatively small subset of the world’s many possible organizational forms and institutional environments. Nonetheless, a growing number of organizational scholars are responding to social and economic globalization with increased interest in organizations outside these traditional contexts, particularly in developing countries.
