My Journey with AFAM

Ever since joining AFAM in 2012, I have grown as an academic and an African scholar and researcher in many ways. I was able to forge ahead in publications through collaborative work with researchers within and outside the continent. I gained a wealth of experience, especially in publishing with reputable publishers such as Routledge with experienced researchers regionally and internationally.

I have gained tremendously in research methodologies as I have attended diverse conferences and workshops through AFAM and AoM, and collaborated immensely with continental and international researchers. With tons of inspiration and encouragement from the AFAM Executive Team, especially Professor Stella Nkomo, I have grown as a researcher and was able to publish book chapters and the goal of producing/editing a regional book on ‘People Management Policies and Practices in Southern Africa’ became a reality.

The book was published by Edward Elgar in 2025 and is a collaborative work with scholars from nine Southern African countries (Link to the book: People Management Policies and Practices in Southern Africa). Hence, being a member of AFAM has contributed to my growth in my career and academic development.

“I would urge all upcoming and aspiring scholars and researchers not to shy away from asking for collaboration with seasoned international scholars and researchers to enhance their career and expand their analytics to a greater level. In this way, your hard work and resilience will ultimately pay off and help you achieve your goals as an African scholar and academic.”

I also encourage young scholars to actively participate in advancing the academy. In my own little way, I have played different roles within AFAM since the first 2010 meeting in Boston, USA when AFAM was launched. I took up the challenge of being a conference chair and hosted AFAM’s first Biennial conference in Africa in January 2014 at the University of Botswana.

I joined the AFAM Executive Board in 2018 and have been the Editor of Conference Proceedings and a Book of Abstracts from 2023–2025. You have perhaps bought some gift — e.g. AFAM caps, t-shirts or mugs — from me as the AFAM Merchandise/Promotional Material Coordinator between 2023–2025. I have worked very closely with colleagues to grow the Southern Africa membership as the Regional Director, Southern Africa Regional Office since January 2023 until 2025.

Long live AFAM!
